What is a short-term loan, and when does it make sense?

Under the National Credit Act regulations, a short-term credit transaction is a loan of up to R8 000 that you repay within 6 months. In everyday language it is a payday loan: you borrow a small amount online and pay it back from your next salary, or over a few monthly instalments.
It makes sense when the cost is urgent and you know exactly where the repayment will come from: a car repair before you can get to work, a prepaid electricity top-up, a school trip. It is not the right tool for a big purchase or for costs that come back every month. For larger amounts, personal loans in monthly instalments keep each repayment smaller.
How quickly can a short-term loan be paid out?
Applications take a few minutes and the providers on this page move quickly once you are approved:
- Jabulani Money: a decision usually in 10 to 25 minutes during working hours, money the same day or the next day.
- Century (CreditZA): aims to approve and pay out on the same day; payout is typically the same business day for applications completed before 14:00, Monday to Friday.
- FinPug: lenders can pay out online within 15 to 30 minutes of an application.
- Creditgenius: the form takes under 2 minutes; approval, signing and payout happen on the partner lender’s website.
To keep things fast, have your SA ID, your latest 3 months of bank statements and your bank details ready before you start.
How much does a short-term loan cost?

Look at the rand amount you will repay. Because the term is short, an annual rate looks very high even when the cost in rand is moderate. These are the examples the providers publish:
| Provider | Amount and term | Total to repay |
|---|
| FinPug (partner offer) | R1 000 over 67 days | R1 000 (0% cost) |
| Century (CreditZA) | R1 700 over 5 days | R1 991.60 (calculator) |
| Creditgenius (partner loan) | R3 000 over 91 days | R3 915 in 3 instalments |
The regulations cap every short-term loan: interest of at most 5% a month on your first short-term loan in a calendar year and 3% a month on later ones, an initiation fee of R165 plus 10% of the amount above R1 000 (never more than R1 050), and a service fee of up to R60 a month. If it is your first loan, look at the starter offers from 0.01% a day that some partner lenders make through FinPug and Dengoo. The full breakdown is in our guide loan costs explained.
What do you need to apply?
The requirements are similar across providers:
- Be 18 or older and live in South Africa.
- A valid SA ID (Creditgenius also accepts a passport).
- A bank account in your name for the payout and the debit order.
- Proof of income: usually your 3 most recent bank statements. Century asks for a minimum net salary of R5 000 a month.
- A cellphone number and an email address.
Every lender runs an affordability assessment before it signs. That check protects you as much as the lender: a repayment you can manage keeps your credit record clean for the next time you need it.
