Creditgenius is a free loan-comparison and loan-finder service. You fill in one short form, and it connects you with registered South African credit providers that lend from R500 to R8 000 over 91 to 120 days. That gives you three monthly instalments instead of one big payment on payday.

It is unusually transparent about who those lenders are. The Lender partners page names Wonga Finance SA, Lime24 SA, Boodle Finance, FinChoice, Hoopla Loans and Mpowa Finance. It also publishes a representative example: R3 000 over 91 days in 3 instalments of R1 305, R3 915 in total.

For most small loans you do not need a payslip, because the lender can check affordability from your bank statements. Creditgenius looks at your overall situation rather than one line on a credit report, and partner loans can be settled early without penalty.

To compare it with other options, look at the total cost of credit and the full amount to repay. What do you need to apply with Creditgenius?

3D illustration: an ID card next to a ticked list of requirements
  • A South African ID number or passport
  • A mobile number
  • A bank account in your name
  • Proof of income: for most small loans there is no payslip needed, as the lender can assess affordability from your bank statements
  • You must live in South Africa
  • Age: 18 or older

Credit record and blacklisting: Creditgenius says applications are assessed on your overall situation, not one line on a credit report: an adverse listing on its own does not automatically rule you out. If you are under debt review, the law does not allow new credit until that process is formally concluded. Partner lenders may run an enquiry at a registered credit bureau such as TransUnion, Experian, XDS or Compuscan; Creditgenius itself does not.

How do you apply, step by step?
